The Open Gardens Event is back after an absence of several years. We have 10 gardens participating, offering lots of different styles that will inspire your own gardening efforts. Gardens include:
- a tiny front garden
- a Japanese inspired garden
- a prairie-style planting scheme
- raised beds brimming with fruit and vegetables
- traditional country garden planting
- a modern courtyard garden
In short, there’s something for everyone! These are not show gardens, they are practical gardens which give their owners great joy and we are immensely grateful to them for allowing us to explore them.
How the event works
- Collect a map of all the participating gardens from the starting point: Elm Bank, Moor Lane HP13 5YP. Please Note: there is no car parking available in Moor Lane on the day. We suggest parking on Commonside and walking to Moor Lane.
- Follow the suggested route or choose which gardens you would most like to see from the thumbnail descriptions.
- Two of the gardens are at the further reaches of Downley so you may want a car to visit them – both are exceptionally lovely.
- All the open gardens will have a sign displayed so you know you’re in the right place.
- Many gardens have steps and uneven surfaces so please take care. Your visit is at your own risk.
- Return to the starting point where teas and homemade cakes are being served next door in the Sunnybank Methodist Chapel in Moor Lane. Toilets are available at the Chapel.
Come along and enjoy this fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of Downley’s gardens and gardeners!
